Grigori Katz

 Grigori Katz obtained his first musical education from his father. From 1984 - 1990 he attended the central music school of the Tchaikovsky conservatory in Moscow and from 1990 - 1997 he studied at the Hanns Eisler music academy in Berlin, where he got his diploma and was graduated from the soloist class with distinction and decorated as one of the best students.

 Grigori Katz has won numerous prizes in European bass competitions, most recently winning Second Prize at the First International Bass Competition in Edinburgh (1998). Additionally, with his brother Pawel he won Third Prize at the First International Chamber Music Competition in the Ukraine (1993), as well as Second Prize at the Twelfth International Chamber Music Competition in Greece. At the 4th International Max Reger Chamber Music Competition (2006) in Germany, as a member of the Katz Trio, Grigory was the recipient of the "Special Prize" award. He was as a soloist additionally distinguished with the prize for exceptional interpretation of a Max Reger solo work.

 Grigori Katz has appeared as soloist with several European orchestras, and has made many recordings for German and Russian radio and television. Along with his numerous performances as part of the Katz Trio and Katz Duo, he has performed chamber music with such artists as Gidon Kremer, Yuri Bashmet, and Boris Pergamenschikow.

 Since 1990, Grigori Katz has served as Principal Bass for several European orchestras, including the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, Musicae Vitae Chamber Orchestra of Sweden, and Königliche Kapelle in Copenhagen, and he was Assistant Principal Bass of the Deutsche Symphonie Orchester. In November 2004, he began his current position as Principal Bass of Sinfonieorchester St. Gallen in Switzerland.

 Grigori Katz has been a faculty member of the Munster School of Music of the Wilhelm's University in Westphalia since 2001.
